Matt Damon on Tony Gilroy's Original 'Bourne Ultimatum' Script: 'A Career-Ender'

The production woes during the three 'Bourne' films are the stuff of moviemaking legend. Doug Liman butted heads with studio executives during 'The Bourne Identity,' and things didn't go that much smoother for 'The Bourne Supremacy' and director Paul Greengrass. Which is to say nothing of the mess that was the pre-production period during 'The Bourne Ultimatum,' the final installment in the franchise, to date, with Matt Damon. How bad did things get on 'Bourne 3'? Bad enough that Damon just told GQ in a new interview that writer Tony Gilroy's initial script draft was "unreadable." "It's really the studio's fault for putting themselves in that position," Damon told GQ about the studio cutting a deal with Gilroy to do one script for 'Ultimatum' for "an exorbitant of money." "I don't blame Tony for taking a boatload of money and handing in what he handed in. It's just that it was unreadable. This is a career-ender. I mean, I could put this thing up on eBay and it would be game over for that dude. It's terrible. It's really embarrassing. He was having a go, basically, and he took his money and left." Damon and Greengrass brought in Scott Z. Burns (who wrote 'Contagion' for Steven Soderbergh) and George Nolfi to touch things up -- which they did. 'Ultimatum' was a smash hit with critics and audiences alike -- something that Damon perhaps remembered when calling up GQ to clarify his Gilroy-focused slams. "If I didn't respect him and appreciate his talent, then I really wouldn't have cared," he said. "My feelings were hurt. That's all. And that's exactly why I shouldn't have said anything. This is between me and him. So saying anything publicly is fucking stupid and unprofessional and just kind of douchey of me." 'The Bourne Legacy' -- which stars Jeremy Renner and leaves the door open for Damon's Jason Bourne to return -- arrives in theaters in August of 2012. Tony Gilroy is the director. Angelina Jolie Talks Tabloids: I Find Them Quite Shallow

First Published: November 28, 2011 12:55 PM EST Credit: Getty Images Caption Angelina Jolie steps out at the premiere of The Tree of Life at the Bing Theatre at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles on May 24, 2011LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Angelina Jolies romances, wild past and her family have all been a focus of the tabloids over the years, but the Oscar winner said the stories dont reveal true insight into who she is. I dont see those things and I dont know what they are, Angelina told Bob Simon in an interview to promote her directorial debut for the film, In the Land of Blood and Honey, on Sundays 60 Minutes. But, I assume theyre not me, theyre not who I am, theyre not what I spend my day caring about. The actress admitted she does occasionally get word over whats being reported, and she considers the magazines to be mostly erroneous fluff. I find them quite shallow and often wrong when I do hear about what they are, she said. Those stories about Angelina once wanting to be a funeral director, however, are true. It sounds like this very strange, eccentric dark thing to do, but in fact, I lost my grandfather and I was very upset with his funeral and so we discussed that maybe there are ways where this whole idea of how somebody passes and how a family deals with his passing and what death is, should be addressed in a different way, she said. If this acting thing didnt work out, that was going to be my back up. While acting has worked out just fine for Angelina, when asked if she prefers it when shes working or when Brad is (the two dont take projects that overlaps), she admitted to choosing family every time. When Im at home with the kids, she laughed. In the Land of Blood and Honey, hits theaters on December 23. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. All rights reserved. 'Angry Birds' Enters Competitive Hollywood Toy Market

This story first appeared in the Dec. 2 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.our editor recommendsIPO for Angry Birds Creator Rovio as Early as Next Year'Angry Birds' Knocked Off Top of Apple App Store Chart by Walt Disney's SwampyNew Rovio Exec David Maisel Believes Angry Birds Movie Will Change Video Game Adaptations Entertainment studios that are accustomed to dominating the licensed toy market have a formidable, feathered foe this holiday season. Angry Birds, the online app from Finnish company Rovio that has been downloaded more than 500 million times worldwide, is now a line of plush animals, balls, pillows, key chains and more that are expected to be hot sellers this holiday. "It's phenomenal," says Alec Kessler of Commonwealth Toys & Novelties, the NY company that in 2010 licensed toy rights for Birds, its fastest-growing property. Synergy between the app and the toy is especially strong given how quickly the scowling characters have become a pop culture phenomenon. "It's the app that has turned into a toy," says Kessler. "The more downloads the app gets, the more recognizable the toys are." PHOTOS: Toy Wars: Battle of the Blockbuster Summer As holiday shopping begins on Black Friday, Rovio is going head-to-head with Disney's venerable Princess line and Cars 2, which are expected to be the season's top sellers, as well as powerhouses Star Wars and Sesame Street. The revived Smurfs, riding high on the $500 million worldwide gross of Sony's summer movie, also are expected to sell big. Retail sales of licensed toys and games totaled $6.36 billion in 2010, down from $6.5 billion in 2009, according to The Licensing Letter. But with the economy somewhat improved, hopes are high for a strong holiday season. According to Kessler -- who says the demographic for Birds is "3 to 83" -- there's only one problem with the toys' soaring popularity: "Retailers are having a hard time keeping them in stock." 'Mirror Mirror' is 'Faerie Tale Theatre' for 2012

.publish-content img Responses towards the just-launched trailer for 'Mirror Mirror' -- next year's adaptation from the 'Snow White' story book starring Jennifer Aniston because the Evil Full -- have concentrated on how cheesy the entire factor looks. There's slapstick, corny puns along with a pedigreed actress vamping up to levels so cheesy, you may require your levels of cholesterol checked after. So yes, 'Mirror Mirror' might be an over-the-top circus, but is the fact that always a poor factor? Most likely not, particularly if the trailer follows through on its seeming promise to create 'Mirror Mirror' the current-day version of 'Faerie Tale Theatre.' Should you was raised within the 1980s and do not understand what 'Faerie Tale Theatre' is, then you definitely skipped on among the best things in the decade. 'FTT' would be a cable tv show, created and located by Shelley Duvall, that presented new monthly adaptations of beloved favorite anecdotes. Duvall sold every favor she should have been owed, since the 'Faerie Tale Theatre' talent roster would be a who's who of Hollywood heavyweights: Robin Williams, Billy Very, Barbara Fisher, Francis Ford Coppola, Klaus Kinski, Mick Jagger, Susan Sarandon, Tim Burton, Matthew Broderick, Angelica Huston as well as little Ough Schroeder! Watch a trailer for 'Faerie Tale Theatre' There is even a chapter for 'Snow White'! Rather than Lily Collins, it had been Elizabeth McGovern. Rather than Armie Hammer, it had been 'Solid Gold' host Rex Cruz. Rather than Jennifer Aniston, it had been Vanessa Redgrave. And also the mirror? Which was voiced by the one and only Vincent Cost. 'Mirror Mirror' director Tarsem Singh told Moviefone he wanted to create a "sickeningly kiddie" movie all he's really doing is ongoing a 3-decade tradition of having stars to pork up for that children. Besides, if Nathan Lane absolutely must star inside a corny large-screen version of the classic children's story, it's better he be appreciated for 'Mirror Mirror' than 'Nutcracker three dimensional.' Inside the Fight for ICM's Future (Analysis)

This story first appeared in the Nov. 25 issue of The Hollywood Reporter Magazine. our editor recommendsSecrets of Hollywood Agency MailroomsTALENT SIGNINGS: New Clients at CAA, ICM, Gersh, APA When stalwart TV lit agents Josh Hornstock and Mickey Berman left ICM in October, the blow to the agency was symbolic and severe. President Chris Silbermann had fought to retain the two, whom he had groomed at Broder Webb Chervin Silbermann Agency, the boutique that ICM purchased in 2006. But he couldn't provide what UTA offered -- partnership -- and the two packed their bags. PHOTOS: Secrets of Hollywood Agency Mailrooms ICM's inability to keep agents in its top-notch TV department, home to A-list creators like Chuck Lorre and Shonda Rhimes, illustrates the growing gulf between key personnel and Suhail Rizvi, the publicity-shy businessman who acquired a controlling interest in ICM eight months before Silbermann and company joined and became the agency's profit center. Silbermann and his lieutenants Bob Broder and Ted Chervin are said to be frustrated with Rizvi, who appears to be thwarting Silbermann's plan to transform the 150-agent ICM into a partnership. Given that impasse, as well as a frosty relationship with ICM's longtime chairman, Jeff Berg, it seems likely the former BWCSA partners will leave the 36-year old ICM to form a new agency. According to a knowledgeable source, Rizvi, a co-founder of Birmingham, Mich.-based Rizvi Traverse Management who resides in Greenwich, Conn., has grown less interested in the long-term future of ICM after concluding that the agency won't provide him the platform to make an larger impact as an investor in media. He already has wrung a profit out of the $100 million investment his company and Merrill Lynch made in ICM, this source says, and is said to be quietly shopping his interest in the agency. PHOTOS: 10 Showrunners to Watch in 2012 With offices in Los Angeles and NY, Rizvi Traverse has investments in Twitter, Facebook and Summit Entertainment; in March, the company teamed with Hugh Hefner to take Playboy Enterprises private. Rizvi, 45, is so private that photographs of him are all but impossible to find. Although he turns up at the Cannes Film Festival, sources say he is the antithesis of the usual Hollywood investor who wants to attend parties and meet stars. He counts WME co-CEO Patrick Whitesell as a friend: The pair played tennis in the early 1980s in their hometown of Iowa Falls, Iowa. Rizvi was a staunch supporter of President Barack Obama. He sits on the board of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. One insider says ICM employees know little about Rizvi and his dealings with the agency. Rizvi's apparent disinterest in restructuring ICM leaves Silbermann fighting a seemingly losing battle. Meanwhile, his relationship with the chilly Berg, who rarely interacts with associates and is said to be against converting ICM into a partnership, has degenerated to the point where sources say the two don't speak. PHOTOS: 9 Highest Paid Entertainment CEOs Silbermann and others are said to bristle at a corporate structure that essentially makes them Rizvi Traverse employees. (An April report said Berg, Silbermann and some agents hold ICM stock.) Sources say Rizvi hasn't nurtured ICM, instead focusing on cost savings. A 2006 Wall Street Journal story said, for instance, that soon after Rizvi Traverse purchased its stake, it ordered that ICM's flower budget be cut. In May, Silbermann discussed with THR efforts to turn ICM into a partnership, saying, "I believe that agents should be able to reap what they sow." If Silbermann, Broder and Chervin depart, they would likely leave behind a steady stream of TV packaging income from such hit shows as Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory and Scrubs. But without a strong film group, the departure of its TV cash cow would devastate ICM, making it a prime target for a takeover. Paradigm, which in the past acquired such agencies as Writers & Artists, is said to have examined a deal, though a source close to the situation says Rizvi has received no credible offers. A Paradigm rep says, "We don't comment on speculation and rumored deals." Rizvi Traverse and ICM declined comment. While, everyone else reply to 'Drive' remains mixed, the primary one component that practically everyone has made the decision on might be the film's awesome music. For the, you'll be able to thank composer High high cliff Martinez. While Martinez had nothing associated with writing the film's two most identifiable tracks -- 'A Real Hero' by College and 'Nightcall' by Kavinsky -- he did score the haunting instrumental tunes that carried out with the Nicolas Winding Refn-directed film. Inside an interview with Spinner, Martinez mentioned It's totally strange. I'm gratified the background music will get a great deal attention, however i am mystified due to it. It's a good film. Allow me to think that I've done a few good films before. I realize the tunes ['A Real Hero' and 'Night Call'] were very popular, nonetheless they were available extended just before the film showed up in this area. I realize the score is great, but Allow me to think that I've written top quality scores before, so the fact it's getting all this attention is completely new and unforeseen. While Martinez is surprised about the response towards the 'Drive' score, his entire career can virtually be categorized by doing this. Ultimately, Martinez began just like a drummer for your Sought After Chili A myriad of all kinds of peppers and Captain Beefhart before moving onto score movies. He confesses that "it absolutely was kind of accidentally.Inch Mentioned Martinez: "Allow me to believe that i'm versatile, and could do just about anything in the Broadway musical with a tampon commercial, however, I'm probably effective in a very specific type of film score." Oddly enough, Martinez started creating films after director Steven Soderbergh heard the task he'd completed with a chapter of 'Pee Wee's Playhouse.' Martinez also discussed his process recording the score for 'Drive,' as well as the work he's done on movies formerly for instance 'Sex, Lies and Videotape.' Oka!

A Dada Films (in U.S.) release given Needed Viewing from the Roland Films-James Bruce production. Produced by James Bruce, Lavinia Currier. Executive producer, Andrew Fierberg. Co-producer, Norbert Bogbeyate. Co-executive producer, Isaach p Bankole. Directed by Lavinia Currier. Script, Currier, Suzanne Stroh, Louis Sarno, based on Sarno's memoir, "Last Ideas Before Vanishing When confronted with the planet.InchWith: Kris Marshall, Isaach p Bankole, Mapumba, Will Yun Lee, Mbombi, Essanje, Peter Riegert. (Sango, Akka, French, British dialogue)If movies were prone to sanity tests, "Oka!" is a crazy some guy getting a 3-day beard together with a sock full of kruggerrands under his mattress bed mattress. Suggestive of Monty Python, evocative of Scots novelist William Boyd ("An Excellent Guy in Africa") in most cases disdainful of recent stereotypes and patriarchal white-colored-guy-on-the dark-region tales, Lavinia Currier's film gets the kind of freewheeling sensibility and contempt for conformity that could provide theatrical traction -- even if, when it comes to nearly anything inside the niche arena, the current climate seems particularly hostile. It may be also as hostile since the atmosphere Ray Whitman (Kris Marshall) finds themselves in. Inspired with the real-existence Louis Sarno (adapting his memoir with Currier and Suzanne Stroh), Ray is certainly an ethnomusicologist that's been recording and safeguarding the music activity in the Bayaka pygmies of Yandombe, inside the Central African Republic, which is returning where you can Nj to enhance funds. When his acerbic physician (Peter Riegert) notifies him he's dying, he decides not to watch for liver transplant and rather presses a wealthy patron to purchase another trip to Africa, so they can finish his target the Bayaka. Ray finds a " " new world " " altering in Yandombe. He's still the greatest, whitest guy around, nevertheless the Bayaka are actually acquiring a hard time within the Bantu, whose mayor, Bassoun (Isaach p Bankole), has moved the pygmies in to a smaller sized village and forbidden them from entering their sacred forest. Bassoun is wanting to promote the timber rights with a predatory Chinese businessman, Mr. Yi (Will Yun Lee). The encroachment in the modern round the ancient can be a major theme, both narratively and visually, in "Oka!" (the Bayaka word for "listen"), and upkeep is Currier's apparent message here. But Ray is really a lesser deliverer when compared to a stand-looking for everyone else he towers comically inside the pygmies, who all make affectionate fun of him. Probably the most mischievous residents is Sataka (Mapumba), the tribe's great hunter, who, along with his wife, Ekadi (Essanje), went in to the jungle to leave the capricious rule of law. What's refreshing about "Oka!" is its aversion to the kind of cliches the Bayaka people exhibit as much self-interest as anybody, they'll use Ray for individuals he's worth, and they have their decidedly craven side. Sataka's daughter, Makombe (Mbombi), on whom Ray evolves a crush, plays him as being a sea food. Still, the Bayaka will be the sufferers here: Bassoun desires to frame Sataka with an elephant killing and accuse the pygmies of poaching, which will enable him to move the Bayaka permanently out, and Mr. Yi in. While Ray can be a hero, he's only one of several, similar to the film is simply partly a farcical dramedy about endangered people. It's also a personality film, the wildlife in the Central African Republic playing a prominent role inside the visual storytelling, and Currier eschews the lions and tigers and bears for much more hideous and fascinating kinds of African wildlife. But the majority of the species seen in "Oka!" get a completely new exceeding, including homo sapiens. Production values are often good, d.p. Conrad W. Hall's work exceptional in using the level of smoothness of Africa.Camera (color), Conrad W. Xbox 360 lines up programming providers

The key element of the design will be the incorporation of Microsoft's Bing search engine that will locate content using Kinect's voice and motion controls.Microsoft has lined up nearly 40 new cable and satellite providers, and individual channels to stream live TV and VOD programming through its Xbox 360 videogame console in 20 countries. As expected, Comcast's Xfinity TV, Verizon's FiOS TV, Epix, HBO, Bravo and Syfy are among them ( Daily Variety , Oct. 3), but the U.K.'s BBC, Canada's Rogers On Demand, Telefonica in Spain, Televisa in Mexico, ZDF in Germany, and MediaSet in Italy will also join Xbox Live's lineup of content partners sometime this fall. In addition, Best Buy's CinemaNow will offer up films alongside Netflix, while online entertainment and news sites AlloCin, Sony's Crackle, Dailymotion, iHeartRadio, MSNBC, NBC's "The Today Show," and TMZ will appear on Xbox Live. The integration of YouTube, Vevo and fights from UFC had already been announced at the E3 videogame confab in May. All will offer streams through apps that each company will launch and manage. In most cases, the apps will mirror each company's mobile apps like HBO Go. But the apps will also be a way for channels or speciifc shows to offer up more video or original programming like web series it doesn't have time to air on TV. "By having their own, (content owners) will have the ability to push programming out directly to the consumer," Blair Westlake, corporate VP of the Media & Entertainment Group for Microsoft, told Daily Variety . "They'll be able to tailor the app to the content they produce." Microsoft has yet to disclose an exact date of when the partners will begin appearing on the console, but they will rollout as a relaunch of the interface currently used to control the Xbox Live service, which is being redesigned to better integrate more programming options. The key element of the design will be the incorporation of Microsoft's Bing search engine that will locate content using Kinect's voice and motion controls. Microsoft has sold 10 million Kinect sensors worldwide. Given the sheer number of apps that will appear on Xbox Live, Microsoft is relying on Bing as the way to cut through the clutter of content. A search for a title, for example, will identify all content providers that carry it and various forms -- sequels, videogames, soundtracks -- that may relate. "For many years, we've been talking about 500 TV channels; now we are approaching more than 500 apps," Westlake said. "That's where search will come hugely into play. The ability to find what you're looking for will be key." As viewership of videos on the Xbox 360 has tripled over the past year, Microsoft is eager to up the number of content deals it has for Xbox Live as it looks to turn the console into an all-in-one set-top box that can access all forms of entertainment, not just games. And by adding their services to consoles like the Xbox 360, TV providers believe they can put programming back in front of gamers by turning to the device they're already using rather than hoping they switch to other set-top boxes. Microsoft has sold 55 million Xbox 360s. Xbox Live has 35 million members who pay to access content, versus Comcast's 22.5 million and Verizon's 3.8 million for FiOS TV. "Today's announcement is a major step toward realizing our vision to bring you all the entertainment you want, shared with the people you care about, made easy," said Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. "Combining the world's leading TV and entertainment providers with the power of Kinect for Xbox 360 and the intelligence of Bing voice search will make TV and entertainment more personal, social and effortless." The new partners join AT&T's U-verse, Netflix, ESPN 3 and Hulu Plus, in the U.S., Telus in Canada, BSkyB in the U.K., Canal Plus in France, Vodafone Portugal, VimpelCom in Russia, and Foxtel in Australia, which already offered streaming video through Xbox Live in their territories. Through Verizon's FiOS TV, Xbox Live will offer up 26 live TV channels, including MTV, Spike, Food Network, Comedy Central, HBO, CNN and Nickelodeon. In order to use the services, Xbox Live users must prove they are subscribers to the cablers or satcasters, or in Bravo or Syfy's case, confirm that they are paying cable or satellite customers. Canceling 'Playboy Club' No Surprise, No Triumph of Activism

NBCDon Draper called. He says you're fired. Outside of the fact that NBC made the announcement when everybody else was waiting to find out about the new iPhone, nothing about the cancellation of The Playboy Club should come as a surprise. PHOTOS: PTC vs. TV: 10 Television Show Controversies It was the first freshman series to get the axe (and I had that covered nicely with 5-1 odds on my story about series likely to get canceled). Here are a few reasons why you couldn't call this unexpected: 1. It was bad show, period. The writing was weak, the acting spotty and the sexism too ridiculous and obvious to comment on more than once. 2. Nobody was watching it. It had no buzz tune-in numbers and sank in each successive airing, finishing with 3.4 million viewers on its third and final episode. Those are cable numbers -- and not especially impressive cable numbers. The cost of filming The Playboy Club was too expensive to support that kind of tanking. PHOTOS: 10 TV Shows Canceled Faster Than 'The Playboy Club' 3. While the Parents Television Council may feel some vindication in NBC pulling the plug, this cancelation wasn't about boycotts. It was about owning up to the obvious. America did not care for a Mad Men-esque retro series about a lifestyle and brand more dated than any nostalgia could prop up. One would hope that the reason viewers tuned out in droves after sampling it was because it had none of the attributes of a high-quality drama like Mad Men. NBC simply misjudged the appeal of a show like that, despite mountains of evidence from Mad Men that being brilliant doesn't also mean dominating the Nielsens. Nobody bought into NBC's big tent approach to nostalgia, so the Bunnies are no more. NBC did give full season pick-ups to the sitcoms Up All Night and Whitney (that latter decision makes a mockery of my 8-1 odds on its cancellation, but then again NBC doesn't have a whole lot of bench depth, especially with more cutting to come). Unsaid in that NBC renewal announcement -- "We're probably gonna kill Free Agents next." That series is doing even worse than Playboy Club in the ratings. PHOTOS: Fall TV Death Pool: Will 'Charlie's Angels,' 'Whitney' or 'How to Be a Gentleman' Be Axed First? None of this was unexpected, mind you. NBC has a long way to go before exiting the cellar. It has too many holes to patch successfully. The network is likely to plug the Bunny hole with repeats of Prime Suspect, a series that has its own ratings woes, then slot Brian Williams' newsmagazine, the woefully named Rock Center, in the time slot starting Oct. 31. There's no telling if the country is willing to be sold yet another newsmagazine promising to be different and Rock Center has its work cut out for it, battling popular dramas Hawaii Five-O on CBS and Castle on ABC. Speaking of ABC, the network is now on the clock regarding the crash-and-burn that is Charlie's Angels. If it hurries, it can piggyback the cancelation announcement with NBC's for Free Agents, thus minimizing the PR damage. In any case, now that series have had two or three airings, things are about to get awfully ugly. Email: Tim.Goodman@THR.com NBC Fall TV Preview

Evangeline Lilly Drops Hobbit Hints, Inspires Nerd Boners While Speaking Elvish

At last night’s premiere of Real Steel, co-star Evangeline Lilly — fresh from shooting The Hobbit in New Zealand, ZOMG — caught up with Access Hollywood for an unusually geeky Access Hollywood chat, during which she dropped a few lines in Elvish. So hot, right LOTRers? See if you can devise plot hints from the Elf-speak dialogue she trilled, after the jump. Something something “Come now!” And something something “The cells are empty!” Good luck figuring it all out, Middle Earthers. My favorite moment comes at the beginning of the chat when Lilly drops some real talk, admitting that with all of the prep crews helping her on set she has no excuse for messing up her Hobbit performance as Tauriel, a woodland elf. If only all actors were so self-aware! And then, the ultimate question: “Are you scared of the fans of this?” Because you should be! My preeeee-cious… Oh wait, my bad. The question was, “Are you scared of the fans of this… because they are such rabid fans?” Same difference, I guess. And Evangeline is rightfully scared. “My character is actually not in [J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel] The Hobbit,” she explains. “My character is an invention of Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Phillippa Boyd, so either fans are going to love her or absolutely despise and be bitter towards her because she’s not authentic.” Aaaaand then Access Hollywood’s on-air interviewer brings it back to LOST, offering the theory that fans of the television series are also huge Tolkien nerds and therefore will forgive Lilly for perverting the legacy of their literary icon. Hmm. Sure? Evangeline Lilly Dishes On Filming ‘The Hobbit’ [Access Hollywood]
